The invention of cars has marked the essential milestone for mankind’s machine technology since the Industrial Revolution. The popularization of cars has changed the development pattern of society, the speed of urban growth, the artificial cityscape and even the everyday life mode. Classical Automobiles are the collective items which illustrate to us the history of cars. With different styles and different ages, classical cars celebrate mankind’s creativity with their perfect proportion, elegant streamline, precise details and luxurious materials.

Description

In Hong Kong, there are certain numbers of car enthusiast groups which actively organize events for car lovers. However, motor heritage has not yet become a popular topic for the general public. The task of this project is to construct a classical car museum at Fanling, which is a good opportunity to make classical car events and the Hong Kong motor heritage popular.

The site is within walking distance to Fanling KCR station, and surrounded by public housing estate, private residential development, school, government office, low density residential area and public sport facilities. The surrounding roads have fast link to other suburbs and even Mainland China.

Description

The dense pedestrian and vehicular flow and the variety of surrounding activities are beneficial to create a public event hub for the project. However, the current site is like an isolated island: the magistracy is abandoned, pedestrian flow is broken by the road fences, ground pedestrian movement is highly restricted. Therefore, how to modify the pedestrian link and create an “urban event magnet” for the public becomes the first challenge.
